See Wanda Mallen's Weird & Wonderful Succulents
You're about to visit the large garden and multi-room greenhouse of plant collector Wanda Mallen and husband Gary Vincent. Wanda shares expert tips, takes us through their two acres, and shows us what she's currently "addicted to."
"There was nothing here 25 years ago when we started," Wanda says. A big priority was trees for dappled shade, so Gary obligingly jackhammered planting holes in decomposed granite. "The good thing is DG drains well," Wanda says.
In an extensive multi-room lattice greenhouse built by Gary are dozens of species and cultivars of Sansevieria, Haworthia and Gasteria, plus aloes and euphorbias. Tropicals include bromeliads, ferns, and epiphytic succulents from Asia and...

Psychology of Succulents with Grower-Hybridizer Steven Hammer Part Four of SDCSS Series
Просмотров 2,2 тыс.Месяц назад
In my latest video, mesemb expert Steven Hammer gives perspective on the psychological appeal of succulents. I love how his mind works. Wait 'til you hear him compare Japanese haworthia collectors' preferences to how beauty was perceived in Jane Austen's England. Steven is an erudite delight. His clever metaphors and tongue-in-cheek comments make listeners (or readers) do a double-take. In the ...

Discover Dwarf Aloes: Varieties, Potting & Care Essentials

Dwarf or "star" aloes are becoming hugely popular. Succulent collectors like them because they stay small and are perfect for pots. No two cultivars are alike, yet all share similarities. These diminutive aloes have intriguing textures, patterns and colors. Many have teeth that contrast with the green or blue of the leaves. No worries, these are not sharp or spiny succulents! In this video you'...

Three Beautiful, Practical, Problem-Solving Succulent Gardens
La leche que sale. Ella: Hay!!
Hi, thanks for your great video. It’s the very end of June in the south of France and I just discovered an orgy of agave mites in my century agave. Is it too late in the season to treat them?
Oh theyre very common as landscaping plants in South Africa. So pretty though
You are a guru of plants mum and you are my go to person online.
Wow, what an underrated video! I'll definitely be checking out your book!
To clarify: When Wanda says "Come see for yourself" at the end of the video, she's referring to it being a featured garden of the Cactus and Succulent Society's biennial convention in April. More info: cactusandsucculentsociety.org/events/convention/
So fabulous! Thank you for the tour. How do we get info about the tour?
if you belong to the Cactus & Succulent Society, their biennial convention is in San Diego in April 2025, and Wanda’s garden is one of several on tour for attendees.
I’m so glad I found this channel ! I was delighted to see many of our plants we inherited when we moved here from Washington state -- but talk about a learning curb -- and such different climates ! (Trying to grow a garden … I’d love your opinions on that !! )
Welcome to Southern CA, Karie! Do visit my ad-free site, which has lots about garden design and plant choices: debraleebaldwin.com And my books: Designing with Succulents, Succulent Container Gardens, and Succulents Simplified. 💚
Deborah I have watched you for a few years now. I love the videos you put out. Would you consider making another garden tour of your own property? I really loved the one you did before
Hi Loren -- I'm so glad you like my channel and enjoyed the video of my own garden. I'll do another video tour, but I need to wait until after the winter rains. The rest of the year it's not as photogenic due to high heat, frost or drought. In spring, everything's blooming, fresh-looking, and green with new growth. Right now (midsummer) the acacias are dropping seed pods everywhere 😜
Wanda and Gary's garden is one of my all time favorites. Now I can see it whenever I want. Thanks Debra.
What a wonderful way of putting it, Jodi! You know, gardens are constantly in flux. Once a garden is photographed for publication, or is on RUclips, it stays the same forever. Considering the work that goes into making it perfect, that's a reward---and a relief for its owners.
Thank you, Debra, for this lovely visit to a wonderfull garden! And to Wanda and Gary, for sharing their treasure!
Debra excellent review of Wanda’s Amazing garden!
Thank you, Jeanne! And also for introducing me to her over a decade ago. 😍
amazing i want to build the same i recently got a mini cactus hairbrush any idea on ways to maintain and grow it??
What a wonderful and pleasant video and narrative. Was looking for info as I just got a 15 year old plant today.
This is just the most amazing video. My sister sent it to me thank you thank you thank you for sharing. Is there anyway we can go visit this?
Wanda welcomes garden clubs, horticultural societies, and cactus & succulent groups, mainly in spring. If you're a member of the Cactus & Succulent Society of America, in April 2025, it'll be a featured garden on tour during the biennial convention in San Diego.
@@QueenofSucculents I will pass that onto my sister who belongs to the Chula Vista Garden club. I know they would be very interested and I hope to be in San Diego during that time.
Wanda said, "Come see for yourself." Did I miss an address somewhere in the video or your notes?
It’s a private residential garden by invitation only. However if you belong to the Cactus & Succulent Society their biennial convention is in San Diego in April 2025, and Wanda’s garden is one of several on tour for attendees. Pretty sure that’s what she meant.
Debra -- have you ever been to the botanical gardens in Phoenix? You'd LOVE it!
This was so heavenly. What an immaculate garden!
What a fabulous couple and an inspiring garden/collection!
at 3:28 I think thats Cleistocactus winteri, not A. flagelligformis
Thanks, Oakes. Good catch! I'll correct it in the gallery.
WOW!! Amazing garden. I am in awe!! Thanks for sharing!!
Thank you again for a visit to a fabulous garden.
Stunning! Just stunning!
Doesn't the pain going into the cactus hurt the cactus?
For plant names, see the gallery on the corresponding page of my site: debraleebaldwin.com/succulent-garden/wanda-mallen-garden/
Thank you for posting so many plant names, Debra! Much appreciated!
@@nmumpton You're welcome, Nancy, and thank you for your comments!
Wonderful video! Thanks for bringing us along. 😊😊😊😊😊❤
Wow, love it love it. I cannot imagine somebody owns the beautiful garden.❤
What a fabulous garden! I love it. The plants are totally amazing and how she displays them is really art! She sure is lucky to have Gary to figure it all out. As you said, "we should all have a Gary"
Oh my! What an amazing garden. You always find the great gardens. I need this motivation. ❤👏
“We all need a Gary” LOL! Amen, sister!
Fabulous garden such a magical place! ❤
Gorgeous garden. Wish to see more of it.
Oh-My-Lanta! What a spectacular sight to see! Thank you so much for sharing, Debra, and thanks to Wanda and Gary for allowing us to visit their gorgeous gardens!
Inspirational
Beautiful! I appreciate seeing this beautiful yard!
That represents a lot of work - with gorgeous results!
Saguaro is not an English word, the g is h/y/silent
You’re not the only one to wince at my pronunciation. I shall never make that mistake again 😣
3:30 “poquito comeson” means “ a little itchiness” nothing to do with eating.
Thank you!
I’m in central Florida, and I just bought this plant. I hope it will do ok here. I’m planning to keep it in a dry sunny area
It should be fine if it doesn't get too much rain in summer.
I just bought an agave, but I am not confident it is guiengola.
It’s hard to tell when they’re small.
I love the way the rosemary fits in with the succulents, but i have had such difficulty growing that herb.
You don’t mention your location. It’s super easy to grow here in Southern CA.
Do you have succulent Pelargoniums?
Nevermid.
I was trying to find a video on how to replant a bulbin (i hope im using the right terminology lol) cause i didnt want to harm it but im glad i can just stick it in dirt and wait! Im so exited :)
thank you, that was very informative, especially the part about allergies towards latex in the aloe vera plant. QUESTION: If I put the gel in water, and it goes yellow - can I just throw the water away and will that remove the latex and make it safe to eat?
If you have a latex allergy, don’t risk it.
You should see my pathetic little tangerine aloe (Aloe Arborescens cross bred with Cape Aloe). My Maculata's are enormous and flowering and my regular Arborescens are 6+ years old and doing fantastic, but OMG I'm jealous of these beautiful Cape Aloes!!! I'm wondering how long those have been growing in that spot?! I've never seen such mature Cape Aloe, I'm certain it has to do with the fact that I'm in southern Virginia. I would give a pinky finger to have one of those! 😆
We had this problem with few that growing in the front yard last year. We were going to try and treat it last week the javelina family showed up and ate them down the ground. They didn't seem to mind that white stuff ate that also. I have no idea how they are able to chew up the spines without poking their mouth. We live in Phoenix cactus just popup out of the ground here I saw a new one starting to grow in a different area. Not sure why the insect attacked those they are in direct sun all day it seemed to have happen in the winter time.
I love the idea of using succulents to create the bonsai look!
How does the water drain so the roots don’t root
Thanks for this video, Debra. Now I know how to differentiate euphorbias and cacti.
That's great, Sherman! Thanks for commenting!
Thanks for your time, nice video.
Just one word. WAUWIE.. !
